Ventilated facade are a complex system that works by combining various physical and technical principles and result in a number of benefits that are hard to get with a tradition wall covering system: • Enhanced interior climate A building will be more comfortable for its inhabitants if the surface temperature of the interior walls remains as close to room temperature for as long as possible. The benefits of external insulation are twofold: in winter, the walls store heat so the internal room temperature remains high. In summer, the amount of heat accumulated by the perimeter walls falls dramatically, so the heat that reaches the interior because of the effects of the sun’s rays is greatly diminished.

Soundproofing

Ventilated facade increase the soundproofing power of (external) walls. If we compare the Rw of a rendered wall construction and the same wall covered with the insulation - outer facing package, we will see an improvement in its soundproofing ability by up to 10-15 dB. This is because the multiple layer system is able to absorb more noise and the continuous curtain wall eliminates acoustic bridging.

Improved looks

The outer face of a Marazzi Engineering ventilated wall is usually made by attaching plates made of high-tech porcelain stoneware, stone or terracotta and often designers exploit its potential to enhance the appeal of the building. There is countless potential for customising the final solution, for example by using a variety of sizes, by creating a pattern with the joints or colours and finishes of the plates. This ultimately stimulates the creativity of designers and architects, who are often asked to lift the appeal and identity of new buildings or revitalise buildings about to be refurbished using this type of intervention.

Elimination of condensation

When two environments, separated by a wall, have a different temperature and relative humidity, vapour tends to migrate towards the face of the wall facing the environment with the lowest actual pressure. Condensation will form if the actual pressure decreases more rapidly than the saturation pressure during this migration following the lowering of the temperature. The curves of the effective- and saturation pressure will never cross if the insulation is fitted on the outside of the wall and so condensation will never form. The internal humidity eliminated through the higher breathing perimeter walls is also rapidly removed by natural ventilation before it has the chance to settle on the outside face or wall covering.

Protection against rain

The outer face of the ventilated wall protects the perimeter masonry walls against all weather conditions, keeping them dry and eliminating the risk of detachment and infiltration. It is usually fitted with open joints, varying in size between 8 and 5 mm depending on the hook systems, in order to improve air circulation and take the expansion pressure off the slabs. This is a small surface and only a negligible percentage of incident water is able to pass through it, much of which is lost in the air gap. The tiny fraction that manages to reach the outer surface of the layer of insulation is rapidly dried out by the effects of the ventilation.

Their improved performance in terms of thermal insulation (less heat bridging, damping and phase shift of the thermal wave and reduction in the thermal loads on the surface) significantly cuts strain and stress and enhances the performance and durability of the building’s structures and supporting walls.

A modern building is typified by the discontinuity of the shapes and materials used in its construction, leading to heat bridging. In turn this leads to an uneven distribution of the temperature with a negative impact on the climate inside and promoting the formation of condensation and mould. A continuous layer of external insulation protects it in a more uniform way and the outdoor facing blocks the sun’s rays: together, they lower its thermal instability and improve the building’s energy performance.

Cost-effective installation

The metal support structure is lightweight, modular and assembled completely dry, cutting the time needed to fit it on site and making it much more cost effective than traditional insulation.

Ease of maintenance

Although the external face is made using hardwearing materials with exceptional technical specifications, the substructure has a modular design so that each individual plate can be replaced immediately should it be damaged.

Tax benefits for energy saving

In many countries the importance of energy saving has lead to introduce tax benefits for the works that improve energy performances of the buildings.
